Attend Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at 7 p.m. at Calvert Pines Senior Center, 450 West Dares Beach Road, Prince Frederick to get the first look at the 2nd draft of the Calvert County 2040 Comprehensive Plan. Staff and the paid consultant will be presenting the second draft to the Planning Commission(PC) at this special work session.

How will the 2nd draft address Huntingtown retaining the current land use category “Minor Town Center” when it’s citizens (via written comment due 12/8/2017) overwhelmingly indicated they wanted the heart of Huntingtown to remain smaller and see less development, thus supported the village designation? Click here for the 2nd Draft document

Will Huntingtown get the same 1 mile radius around the town center with higher density housing? Does that mean the construction of townhouses and apartments or developer-funded water and sewer services? How many base dwelling units per acre will be in our 1 mile radius? How often does your local government listen to you?

A interactive public listening session with Maryland Department of Planning will occur Tuesday March 27, 2018 from 6 – 8pm at the Calvert Pines Senior Center, 450 W. Dares Beach Rd in PF. The purpose is to hear from us local citizens to get a better understanding of our local priorities and identify our concerns and wishes.  This is a rare opportunity to have public discourse and ask questions.  That does not happen often in Calvert. Please attend so you can share your ideas for Huntingtown and Calvert County.

Also covered is how will the new Maryland Development Plan called “A Better Maryland” improve statewide planning and coordination. Listening sessions will be held at 11am with the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and also at 2pm with the Planning Commission (PC). The 11am will take place at the County Course house, 175 Main St in PF and the 2pm at Harriet Brown Community Center at 901 Dares Beach Rd in PF.  Citizens cannot speak at those, but it would be interesting to listen to what our BOCC & PC have to say. Where will the Commissioners spend your tax dollars?  What is being spend on school safety, traffic studies and road improvements?  How much will building a new County office building at Armory Square cost us? Even if you don’t know a thing about budgets, come listen to your fellow citizens. Our County Commissioners will be in the audience and need to hear what you have to say!

Shared from the county web page:  The Calvert County Department of Finance & Budget will hold a Public Hearing next week on Tuesday March 20th at 7pm at the Calvert Pines Senior Center, 450 West Dares Beach Rd in Prince Frederick. This is to present and receive comments on the FY 2019 Staff Recommended Operating and Capital Improvement Budget. Individuals can sign in to speak for 2 minutes and a group representative can sign into speak for 5 minutes.

Interested persons are urged to view the proposal in its entirety, which will be available one week before the hearing. (Like you can read through 376 pages in one week.) They can do this by: contacting the Department of Finance and Budget at 410-535-1600, ext. 2435, by viewing the FY 2019 Staff Recommended Budget on the County website or reviewing a copy in the Reference Collection in any Calvert County Public Library.

Mark your calendar for the primary election on Tuesday June 26, 2018.  This is your first change to select a new Board of County Commissioners (BOCC).  It is critical that we choose commissioners who are in line with our desire to protect the quality of life we currently enjoy AND carefully allow managed growth that our roadways, facilities and schools can accomadate.

The BOCC selects the members of the Planning Commission (PC), Huntingtown Architectural Review boards as well as other boards and commissions. Therefore their views on everything will affect our daily lives! In basic terms, the BOCC’s views will shape the length of the backup on your commute home, how many apartments and what size stores will be built and how many children will be in your son or daughter’s classroom.  Will Huntingtown Town Center be expanded across MD Rt 4 at Cox Rd? How many dwellings units can be build per acre? How many transfer development rights (TDR) are needed for each dwelling unit? Will the “sunsetting” death of the TDR program begin? Is the construction of a new county government office complex the best use of our money and resources at this time?

32:00 – 47:00 Expansion of Town Center across MD 4 at Cox Rd: This is the most important 15 minutes to Huntingtown. Watch this! Citizen comments e-mailed in on the 1st draft are ignored in favor of one Commissioner’s personal feelings as he drives through our beautiful hometown. Why not put the proposed Fastop Gas station on northbound Rt 4 at Cox Rd instead of on Old Town Rd at the classic car business? Also find precious time wasted on digs at former Planning & Zoning staff and a Commissioner that thinks all of Huntingtown Citizens Association(HCA) thoughts are fed to us by other organizations. We can assure you that we attend all the meetings we can, research and read all the material on our own, and are not dutiful sheep following the herd.

10:00 & 17:00 Development capacity: If Town Centers are expanded can we fit the extra people and households? Where did the “only 37,000” household goal come from and why? (To avoid necessity of overpasses on Rt 4 & building a 5th high school) What if there are 9,000-15,000 additional households, which TDR program could create, bringing the number to 46,000 to 52,000 households by 2040?

14:50 & 26:00 Transfer Development Rights(TDR) if you own these listen to the program languishing, that the value of TDR’s won’t return to their intial high value when created and that the program will be sunset or retired in the future.

Tuesday February 6th at 12:15pm at the Harriet Brown Community Center, 901 Dares Beach Rd in Prince Frederick, will be a joint work session with the Calvert County Planning Commission (PC) & the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC).  This is first formal presentation from PC to BOCC on our long range planning document, the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide all aspects or our lives until the year 2040. Please attend and listen but you will not be allowed to speak.
